TO PREPARE BENZANILIDE BY BENZOYLATION OF ANILINE AND DETERMINE IT'S MELTING POINT.

 Materials Required

  • Funnel
  • Conical flask
  • Filter papers
  • Beaker
  • Measuring cylinder
  • Glass rod
  • Cork
  • Thiele's tube

CHEMTCAL REQUIRED

  • Benzoyl chloride (7ml)
  • 10% Soln of sodium hydroxide (50 ml)
  • Aniline (5ml)

THEORY

Benzanlilide is prepared in the lab by benzoylation at aniline where aniline is treated with benzoyl chloride in sodium hydroxide. Replacement of H. Atom of NH₂ group of aniline by benzoyl group (C6H5CO-) take place. Hence the process is known as benzoylation.

unreacted benzayl chloride reacts with NaoH forming Sodium benzoate and remains in soln

Mechanism:

Benzoylation of compound those are containing active hydrogen such as phenol, aniline, alcohol etc. Form benzoylchoride in presence of aq. NaOH (schotten Baumann reaction)

PROCEDURE

First of all we washed all the apparatus with distilled water before starting the experiment. Then took a 250ml conical flask and then added some aniline and some of 10% of NaOH - then added 7ml of Benzoyl chloride which was tightly closed with help of cork. cooled and shaked the flask vigorously till the smell of Benzoyl chloride got disappeared which generally required 30-35min. Diluted the contents with cold water and filtered off the precipited product. washed then product with cold water we took little residue in a beaker containing ethyl alcohol which was mixed up and filtered again and the remaining I was left to dry in oven below sorc Removed! filter paper from funnel and was dried. In a Capillary tube with one end closed was filled with dried ( white crystalline solid) benzanilide and was fitted in the Thiele's tube and heat was provided, we noted the temp. Where It started melting which was m.p. of benzanilide

RESULT

  • Appearence: white crystalline solid
  • (weight of benzanilide - weight of filterpaper)
  • Yield: 15.6-0.6 = 15gm
  • Actual Melting point: 162°C
  • Observed Melting Point: 163°C

CONCLUSION:

Benzanilide can be prepared in lab by the benzoylation of aniline and melting point Can also be determined.
